Go Beyond the Ballot
By drawing students’ attention to their local governments, systems and services, students will gain appreciation for the potential power of their actions at a local level. Students will work together to choose an issue in their community they feel needs to be solved, and then seek out a local elected official to address it. By the end of the two lessons, students will be better equipped to engage in their local communities.
Learn how to amplify students’ civic power to create change in our communities.
OUR COMMUNITY'S ASSETS LOS BIENES DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD
Learn how to engage students in analyzing their communities' resources and assets using the responses to the public health crisis COVID-19 as a case study.
WHAT IS AN ORDINANCE? ¿QUÉ ES UNA ORDENANZA?
Students will write their own local law in order to better understand some fundamental questions about local governance: Why do ordinances exist? Where are they recorded? What do they mean?
Students will dive deep into the history of voting rights in the U.S. and think about why voting matters to them and how we can all work together to remove barriers to civic participation.
